  BASKETBALL PROGRAM

At the STTY Foundation , our core goals for kids in our basketball program involves them having fun, loving the sport, learning great sportsmanship and receiving the right mentorship that will make them better people off the basketball court.

Our youth basketball programs are structured to benefit kids and their families. STTY Foundation basketball programs are weekend based commitments, so there aren’t tons of practices and games and out of town tournaments to attend. Practices are held right before the games, so kids can learn new skills and then immediately apply them in a game situation.

Our Ball with Books Program is for age groups: 5-12 year olds. Youth are taught proper exercise through basketball skills training and taught life skills through various workouts. We provide year round basketball programming for youths in New York City. The goal of our program is to teach our youth that in order to be successful in that specific field you have to know how to read and write. Literacy is essential to developing a strong sense of well being and citizenship.

Calling all little dribblers and shooters! We have the perfect youth basketball program for you! Throughout our youth basketball leagues, instructional activities are presented in a fun way to engage younger kids. At this age, it’s all about building your child’s confidence in basketball so rules are loosely enforced with an emphasis on teachable moments. At this stage, the most important outcomes are to develop a love of the game, increased self-confidence, and to have fun!

Basketball Skills for 1st – 3rd Graders

Kids in our basketball programs for Pee Wees, our youngest age group, learn the basic skills needed to play basketball including how to properly dribble, shoot, pass and move with the ball. Drills aim to improve the large and fine motor skills, as well as cognitive development. For many kids at this age, the concept of being on a team is new, so special emphasis is placed on working with others.

Kids Basketball Leagues for Ages 5 - 7

Coaches and instructors in the Junior age group reinforce the basics of the sport so young athletes grow in their mastery of dribbling, passing and shooting. At the same time, more advanced basketball skills are introduced with an emphasis on offensive plays and defensive principles.  Your child will learn to drive down the court with the ball, how to box out for the rebound, and how to move the ball effectively on a fast break.  Basketball practice drills aim to improve large motor skills as well as spatial awareness.

Basketball Leagues for Ages 8 - 11

Once players reach our Senior youth basketball leagues, they have a deep love for the sport and a desire to work together as a team. Coaches and instructors in the Senior age group start by revisiting the fundamentals of the game and quickly move to finessing those skills. Scores are kept and rules are enforced. As our youth basketball players gain confidence in the sport, the game naturally becomes more competitive in a fun, age-appropriate setting. As kids grow in their basketball mastery, their leadership abilities and understanding of good sportsmanship also matures.
